WiFi or Wireless fidelity establishes a system that links your computers to the information sources without the use of wires or cables. The system added a new dimension to networking because it does away with the need of a set of wire connections. Instead, computers make use of radio transmission signals.

Because of this easiness, many businesses, schools, malls, restaurants, cafes, stores, airports and other businesses have set up wireless hot spots that allow anyone to log onto the network. This is amazing for individuals that need to be able to work from any location, however there are some disadvantages because hot spots can be used by unauthorized users if not adequately protected through different security safeguards.

Hot spots are among the latest technological wonder that enable people from all walks of life to access wireless connections in heretofore most unlikely places. Hot spots may be provided free by hosts or upon payment of hourly charges.

Among the places where hot spots are usually available free of charges or for a fee are airports and hotels. The best thing that can be said about wireless internet access is that with more opportunities to work and do things, people will, on the whole, be more efficient and productive.

Wireless networking can also be installed in your home, which means you can work in any room in your home or even outside if you so choose. This convenience is gaining universal acceptance and more people are using wireless internet connection in their home system.

The basic requirement of wireless technology is an internet connection, a router and wireless cards for every computer. The router is the device that transmits the signals within the coverage area and which the wireless cards in the computers pick up, thus doing away with the wires and cables. All of this equipment can be purchased in your local computer store or online if you are looking for extra discounts.

If you are interested in installing a wireless network in your home, office, or business, then you can do some research online and install it yourself if you know even a little bit about computers. Your better option however would be to engage the services of a technician if you are not confident you can do the job properly especially if you have a number of computers at home. The problem once you have your hot spot is that anybody within your area of coverage can log on to your server and access the internet at your expense. To prevent unauthorized computers from enjoying the benefits of your systems, use a virtual private network protocols such as the Internet Protocol Security and some other internet security systems.
