There are presently a large number of car breakdown services available to UK drivers, to the degree that it can be hard to settle on a service that suits your needs. In addition, the numerous features available on these policies make the decision even more challenging. In this article we will look at some of the key points you may wish to consider when choosing your policy.
A motorist's choice of car breakdown service is usually driven by two key factors: the features offered by the policy and the cost of that policy. As you might expect, the more features you get in a policy, the more it is likely to cost.
One of the features offered in some, but not all policies, is that of the 'home start' or 'home recovery'. This feature provides cover if your vehicle fails to start or breaks down outside your registered home address. Some policies offer cover within a 1 mile radius of your home, although once again, this figure can vary. You would be most likely to benefit from this feature in winter time, when many vehicles fail to start outside their owners' homes after being unused for a few days. A basic policy would be unlikely to offer this feature; a mid range policy may well do so.
Sometimes it is possible that your car breakdown recovery provider is unable to repair your vehicle by the roadside. In this case, the car would normally be taken to the nearest garage, or a location of your choosing. Whether you have to pay for all, or part of this service, depends on the features in your policy. Such a situation can also mean that you have to stay in a hotel, or take public transport home. Once again, this can be a costly situation, but certain levels of car breakdown policy would provide cover for such costs - although you should bear in mind that there will be a limit to the amount you can spend.
When choosing a policy, you should also think about your driving habits. Do you plan on driving only in the UK? Or do you expect to take several trips to the continent over the year? If the latter is the case, you may consider taking out a policy that provides cover for breakdowns on the European mainland. If, however, you only plan to take a single trip to the continent, a short term European policy might better suit your needs.
While the above is by no means an exhaustive list of things you might consider whilst choosing a car breakdown cover policy, it nevertheless offers some key pointers to make the task a little easier.
